Malaysia’s New RM60 Medical Insurance Plan Is Coming — Here’s Everything You Need To Know About MediAsas

Malaysia's New RM60 MediAsas Medical Insurance Plan
257Views

Healthcare costs in Malaysia have been climbing steadily over the past few years, leaving many families worried about whether they can still afford adequate medical protection.

To address this growing concern, the Malaysian government is introducing MediAsas, a new base Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) plan aimed at making private healthcare coverage more affordable and accessible.

The pilot programme is expected to begin in the Klang Valley by the end of July 2026, with nationwide implementation planned for January 2027.

Here’s what every Malaysian should know.

What Is MediAsas?

MediAsas is a government-backed initiative developed jointly by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), Ministry of Health (MOH), and Bank Negara Malaysia as part of Malaysia’s healthcare financing reform.

Unlike traditional medical insurance products, MediAsas is designed to serve as a basic standalone medical protection plan that offers affordable coverage for a wider segment of the population.

The initiative aims to strike a balance between affordability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability as medical inflation continues to rise.

Monthly Premiums Could Start From Around RM60

One of the biggest highlights of MediAsas is its affordability.

According to the government, indicative monthly premiums are expected to range between:

  • Around RM60 per month for basic coverage
  • Up to approximately RM550 per month depending on the selected plan and age

Final premium pricing will only be confirmed before the nationwide rollout in January 2027.

Premiums will be calculated based on:

  • Medical claims experience
  • Healthcare inflation trends
  • Entry age
  • Selected coverage option

The programme will accept applicants up to 70 years old, while coverage can continue until the age of 85.

Two Plans Will Be Available

Consumers can choose between two product options:

MediAsas Teras

A standard medical protection plan designed to provide essential coverage.

MediAsas Fleksi

A standard-plus option offering additional flexibility and enhanced benefits.

Further details on coverage limits and benefits are expected to be announced after the pilot programme.

Pilot Programme Starts In Klang Valley

Before launching nationwide, the government will first conduct a pilot programme between July and October 2026.

The pilot aims to test:

  • Customer experience
  • Claims process
  • System integration
  • Hospital participation
  • Operational readiness

Feedback collected during this period will help improve the programme before its nationwide launch.

Six Major Insurance And Takaful Providers Are Participating

The pilot programme will involve several of Malaysia’s largest insurers and takaful operators, including:

  • AIA Malaysia
  • Allianz Life Malaysia
  • Great Eastern Life Malaysia
  • Prudential BSN Takaful
  • Etiqa Family Takaful
  • Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga

Selected private hospitals in the Klang Valley will also participate.

Why Is The Government Introducing MediAsas?

Malaysia has experienced significant medical inflation in recent years.

As healthcare costs continue to rise faster than general inflation, medical insurance premiums have also increased substantially.

Many Malaysians have found it increasingly difficult to maintain comprehensive medical coverage, especially retirees, older adults, and middle-income families.

MediAsas is intended to provide a more affordable foundation of medical protection while supporting broader healthcare financing reforms.

More Healthcare Reforms Are Also Coming

MediAsas is only one part of a larger transformation of Malaysia’s healthcare system.

Several additional initiatives are being introduced alongside the programme.

One Person, One Medical Record

The government has established the Malaysia Digital Health Certification Network (MDHCN), which aims to improve the sharing of medical records between public and private healthcare providers.

The long-term vision is a secure “One Person, One Record” healthcare system.

Better Transparency In Hospital Bills

The government is also working with private hospitals, insurers, and regulators to improve the presentation of hospital bills.

The objective is to make medical charges easier to understand so patients can make more informed decisions.

A common billing framework is expected to be developed by August 2026.

Streamlining Healthcare Regulations

Authorities are also reviewing licensing procedures for private healthcare facilities to reduce administrative burdens and modernise regulatory processes through digitalisation.

What Does This Mean For Malaysians?

For many individuals who find comprehensive medical insurance increasingly expensive, MediAsas could become an affordable entry point into private healthcare protection.

However, consumers should understand that this is designed as a base medical plan, not necessarily a replacement for comprehensive medical insurance with higher annual limits or premium benefits.

Those with existing medical insurance should review their current coverage before making any changes.

Once the full product details are released, it will be important to compare:

  • Annual coverage limits
  • Room and board eligibility
  • Hospital network
  • Co-payment requirements
  • Lifetime limits
  • Waiting periods
  • Exclusions

Choosing a medical plan should always be based on your healthcare needs rather than monthly premiums alone.

FinCrew’s Take

MediAsas represents one of Malaysia’s most significant healthcare financing initiatives in recent years.

If successfully implemented, it could improve access to medical protection for millions of Malaysians who currently find private medical insurance increasingly unaffordable.

While RM60 monthly premiums have captured public attention, consumers should remember that affordability is only one part of the equation.

Understanding the coverage, benefits, exclusions, and long-term suitability of any medical plan remains just as important.

As Malaysia prepares for the nationwide rollout in 2027, MediAsas may become a valuable option for those seeking affordable medical protection—but making an informed decision will always be the best investment in your health.
