Does Life Insurance Pay If Death Is by Suicide in Malaysia?

161Views

It is an uncomfortable question, but an important one: if someone dies by suicide in Malaysia, will their family still receive the life insurance payout?

The answer may surprise many Malaysians.

In some circumstances, yes. Suicide is not necessarily excluded from a life insurance policy forever. However, the timing of the death and the exact policy wording can completely change what the family receives.

Malaysia Recorded More Than 1,000 Suicide Deaths Last Year

The latest available national figures show that suicide remains a serious issue in Malaysia. PDRM data cited in Parliament recorded 1,079 suicide deaths in 2025, down slightly from 1,114 in 2024. Hansard

DOSM’s latest detailed cause-of-death series currently runs through 2024 and shows a similar longer-term picture. Department of Statistics Malaysia

Year Suicide deaths
2020 641
2021 1,131
2022 973
2023 1,068
2024 1,119

DOSM recorded a suicide mortality rate of 3.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2024, compared with 3.2 in 2023. Department of Statistics Malaysia

There is a small difference between the DOSM and PDRM figures for some years because they come from different official statistical systems. The important point is that Malaysia has continued to record around 1,000 or more deaths annually in recent years. Hansard

So, Does Life Insurance Cover Suicide?

Here’s where many people get it wrong.

A common suicide clause in Malaysian life insurance applies during the first year of the policy.

For example, Prudential states in one current product disclosure that if death by suicide occurs within one year from the effective date of the policy or its revival, premiums paid are refunded without interest rather than the normal death benefit being paid. Prudential Malaysia

Great Eastern similarly explains that its suicide clause means no claim is payable for death by suicide within one year from policy inception or reinstatement. Great Eastern

So a simplified example might look like this:

Scenario Possible Outcome*
Suicide 6 months after policy starts Death benefit generally excluded
Suicide 11 months after policy starts Death benefit generally excluded
Suicide after the exclusion period Death benefit may be payable
Policy lapses and is reinstated Exclusion period may restart
Personal accident policy Different exclusions may apply

*This is illustrative only. Actual coverage depends entirely on the individual policy contract.

The key point is that “life insurance never covers suicide” is not universally correct.

Why Is There a Waiting Period?

The suicide clause helps prevent someone from purchasing a large life insurance policy with the intention of making an immediate claim for their beneficiaries.

But after the contractual exclusion period has passed, suicide may no longer be excluded from the basic death benefit under some life policies.

That doesn’t mean every insurance product works this way.

A personal accident policy, for example, may exclude suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury altogether because suicide is not an accidental death. Allianz’s published personal accident wording, for example, lists suicide and intentional self-inflicted injuries among its exclusions. wwwallianzcommy

Some takaful products can also have different terms. AIA’s one-year i-Starter takaful plan, for instance, lists death by suicide as an exclusion. AIA Malaysia

This is why looking only at the words “Death Benefit: RM500,000” isn’t enough.

One Detail Families Shouldn’t Miss: Reinstatement

Suppose someone bought a life policy five years ago but later stopped paying the premiums.

The policy lapses.

They subsequently reinstate it.

Depending on the policy wording, the suicide exclusion period may begin again from the date of reinstatement.

Both Prudential and Great Eastern examples specifically refer to the one-year period in relation to policy revival or reinstatement. Prudential Malaysia

That’s a small clause that could make a very large difference to a claim.

Don’t Assume — Check These Two Words

If you already have life insurance, open your policy contract and search for:

“Suicide Clause”

Read what happens during the exclusion period, how long that period lasts, what happens to premiums if death occurs during it, and whether reinstating the policy starts a new exclusion period.

Most importantly, don’t assume that one insurer’s wording applies to another policy.

Life insurance can cover death by suicide in Malaysia under certain policies and circumstances — but the policy contract decides the outcome.
